For when you feel

🌙 Tired or burnt out مُنْهَك

Running on empty.

Qur'an · Ar-Room 30:23

“And of His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His bounty. Indeed in that are signs for a people who listen.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

From among His great signs which prove His power and oneness, is your sleeping by night and wakefulness by day, so that you may rest from the tiredness of your work. And from among His signs is that He made the day so that you may disperse, seeking sustenance from your Lord. Indeed, in the aforementioned are proofs and evidences for people who listen attentively while contemplating and accepting.

Reflection

Sleep by night and day is listed as one of Allah's signs, next to seeking His bounty. Rest is not the opposite of worship; it is part of the design.

Qur'an · Al-Baqara 2:286

“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Allah only burdens a person with actions that he is able to do. Allah’s religion is based on ease and not difficulty. If any person does good, he will receive the reward for it in full. If any person does evil, he will receive the punishment for the sin he committed and no one will carry it for him. The Messenger and the believers said, ‘O Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake in doing something or saying something unintentionally. O Lord, do not burden us with that which is difficult for us and which we are unable to do as you had tasked those before us who were punished for their wrongs. Do not give us such instructions and prohibitions which are difficult for us and which we are unable to fulfil. By Your grace, overlook our sins, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our guardian and helper, so give us victory over the disbelievers’.

Reflection

You will not be given more than you can carry. If it feels like more, something on the list is not yours to carry today.

Qur'an · Ash-Sharh 94:7–8

“So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And to your Lord direct [your] longing.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

7.So when you finish your work and complete it, strive in the worship of your Lord.

8.And divert your passion and resolve towards Allah alone.

Reflection

When you have finished, stand for the next thing, and direct your longing to your Lord. Burnout often comes from longing pointed at the wrong target: approval, perfection, the next milestone.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 39

Sahih

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights." (See Fath-ul-Bari, Page 102, Vol)

Reflection

Whoever overburdens himself in religion will not be able to continue. The Prophet ﷺ prescribed moderation and glad tidings. Permission to rest is Prophetic.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6462

Sahih

Narrated `Aisha

The most beloved action to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was that whose doer did it continuously and regularly

Reflection

Small and continuous beats large and occasional. Reduce the size of the good you are trying to do until it becomes sustainable again.
