Qur'an · Az-Zumar 39:53

“Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Say - O Messenger, to My servants who have gone beyond the limit against themselves by ascribing partners to Allah and committing sins: Do not lose hope of Allah’s mercy and of His forgiveness for your sins. Allah forgives all the sins of those who repent to Him. He is the Forgiving towards the sins of those who repent and the Merciful towards them.

Reflection

Addressed to those who have gone too far against themselves: do not despair, Allah forgives all sins. Scholars call it the most hopeful verse in the Qur'an.

Qur'an · Aal-i-Imraan 3:135

“And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

They are the ones; if they were to commit a major sin, or wrong themselves by committing a lesser sin, they remember Allah, and His warning to the wrongdoers and promise to the Mindful; so they ask their Lord for forgiveness, regretting what they did. They ask Allah not to take them to account for it, because Allah alone can forgive, and they do not continue in their disobedience. They know that they have done wrong and that Allah forgives all disobedience.

Reflection

The believers are described as people who slip and then remember and seek forgiveness, not as people who never slip.

Qur'an · Hud 11:114

“And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Maintain, O Messenger, the prayer in the best manner at the two ends of the day: at the beginning and end of the day. Also, maintain the prayer during the hours of the night. Good actions wipe out minor sins. This is a warning for those who pay attention and a lesson for those who accept.

Reflection

Good deeds erase bad ones. The way out of guilt is not endless replay but the next good act.

Qur'an · At-Tahrim 66:8

“O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

O those who have faith in Allah and act according to what He has legislated for them! Repent to Allah sincerely for your sins; Allah will erase your sins from your records and enter you into gardens on the, under the palaces and trees of which rivers flow, on the Day of Judgement: a day on which Allah will not humiliate the Prophet nor those who had faith with him, by entering them into the hellfire. Rather, their light will shine in front of them and their right sides on the Bridge, and they will be saying: “O our Lord! Perfect for us our light so that we can enter Paradise and not be like the hypocrites whose light dies out at the Bridge; and forgive our sins for us, because You are indeed, capable of everything. You are not incapable of perfecting our light and forgiving our sins.”

Reflection

Sincere repentance is answered with removal of misdeeds and gardens. The bar is sincerity, not perfection.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6307

Sahih

Narrated Abu Huraira

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying." By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day

Reflection

The Prophet ﷺ, forgiven in advance, sought forgiveness more than seventy times a day. Istighfar is a daily habit for the best of people, not an emergency measure for the worst.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6309

Sahih

Narrated Anas bin Malik

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than anyone of you is pleased with finding his camel which he had lost in the desert

Reflection

Allah is more pleased with your repentance than a traveller who finds his lost camel with all his provisions in the desert. Your return is met with joy, not suspicion.

A supplication for this

La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin

There is no god but You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Qur'an 21:87, the supplication of Yunus
