For when you feel

🔥 Angry

Before you reply to that message.

Qur'an · Aal-i-Imraan 3:134

“Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

The Mindful are those who spend their wealth for the sake of Allah, in ease and hardship, who control their anger when they could seek revenge, and who forgive those who wrong them. Allah loves the doers of good, whose behaviour is this way.

Reflection

Restraining anger and pardoning people are listed among the marks of the people of Paradise, right after spending in ease and hardship. It is a high rank, and it is reached in ordinary arguments.

Qur'an · Fussilat 41:34–35

“And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

34.Doing good deeds in obedience to Allah that please Him, and doing evil and committing sins which anger Him, are not equal. Counter with good conduct the evil of the one who does bad to you. If you counter his evil by doing good to him, you will soon find the previous enmity you had between you change, and it will be as if he is now an affectionate close friend.

35.Only those who are patient upon harm caused to them and difficulties they face from the people, are given the ability to display this praiseworthy character. Only those who are extremely fortunate are granted the ability to do it, because of the abundant goodness and immense benefit there is in it.

Reflection

Repel with what is better and an enemy can become a close friend. The verse admits it is hard: only the patient and those with a great share of good manage it.

Qur'an · Ash-Shura 42:37

“And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive,”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Those who distance themselves from major and offensive sins and when they are angry at those who offend them by words or deeds they forgive their mistake and do not punish them for it. This pardon is a grace they offer when there is goodness and benefit in it.

Reflection

Forgiving when angry is placed next to avoiding major sins. Anger itself is not the sin; what we do with it is the test.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6116

Sahih

Narrated Abu Huraira

A man said to the Prophet (ﷺ) , "Advise me! "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not become angry and furious." The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said in each case, "Do not become angry and furious

Reflection

A man asked for advice three times and got the same answer three times: do not get angry. Scholars say this covers both the emotion's causes and its consequences. Delay the reply; the advice still works.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6114

Sahih

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger

Reflection

Strength is redefined: not overpowering others but controlling yourself when angry. The strongest person in the room is the one who stays quiet.
