For when you feel

🌊 Anxious

When the mind will not slow down.

Qur'an · Ar-Ra'd 13:28

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

These people whom Allah guides are those who have faith and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah and in His glorification and praise and by reciting and listening to His book. Truly it is only natural that in the remembrance of Allah hearts find comfort.

Reflection

The verse does not say hearts find rest when problems end. It says they find rest in remembrance. Dhikr is available in traffic, at a desk, at 3 am.

Qur'an · Al-Baqara 2:286

“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Allah only burdens a person with actions that he is able to do. Allah’s religion is based on ease and not difficulty. If any person does good, he will receive the reward for it in full. If any person does evil, he will receive the punishment for the sin he committed and no one will carry it for him. The Messenger and the believers said, ‘O Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake in doing something or saying something unintentionally. O Lord, do not burden us with that which is difficult for us and which we are unable to do as you had tasked those before us who were punished for their wrongs. Do not give us such instructions and prohibitions which are difficult for us and which we are unable to fulfil. By Your grace, overlook our sins, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our guardian and helper, so give us victory over the disbelievers’.

Reflection

Whatever is on your plate today was measured for you. Anxiety often comes from carrying tomorrow's load as well; this verse gives permission to put it down.

Qur'an · At-Talaaq 65:3

“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

And He will provide for him in ways he did not even imagine, nor had ever thought of. Whoever relies on Allah in his matters, He will be sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will make His decision come to pass; nothing makes him incapable nor does He miss anything. He has appointed a fixed time for everything, so the severity and ease both have fixed times; they are never permanent on the human.

Reflection

Provision, solutions and relief arrive from directions we did not plan for. Reliance on Allah is not passivity; it is doing your part and leaving the outcome with the One who arranges outcomes.

Qur'an · Ash-Sharh 94:5–6

“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

5.Indeed, with difficulty and constraint, comes ease and options.

6.Indeed, with difficulty and constraint, comes ease and options; when you know that well, the troubling of your people will not terrify you and will not stop you from calling towards Allah.

Reflection

Scholars point out that the verse says ease comes with hardship, not after it. The same season that is hard is carrying its own relief.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6369

Sahih

Narrated Anas bin Malik

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say, "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men."

Reflection

The Prophet ﷺ named worry and grief in his daily supplication, alongside debt and being overpowered by people. Naming the feeling and handing it to Allah is itself part of the Sunnah.

Hadith · Sahih Muslim, Book 46, Hadith 52

Sahih

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying

A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your" if" opens the (gate) for the Satan

Reflection

Strive for what benefits you, seek Allah's help, and do not say 'if only'. This hadith is a complete method for anxious minds: act on what you can, then refuse the spiral of what-ifs.

A supplication for this

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief.
