For when you feel

🧭 Facing a decision

An offer, a move, a choice you keep circling.

Qur'an · Al-Baqara 2:216

“Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Fighting in Allah’s path has been chosen for believers even though it is something that is naturally disliked, because it means risking one’s life and wealth. However, you may dislike something when, it is good and beneficial. An example of this is striving in Allah’s path, which means – in addition to the great reward – the defeat of the enemy and promotion of Allah’s word. On the other hand, you may like something whilst it is bad and harmful to you, such as holding back from fighting: this will result in you being defeated and the enemy’s gaining authority over you. Allah knows full well what is good and what is not, whereas you do not. Therefore, follow His instruction which is better for you.

Reflection

You may dislike something that is good for you and love something that is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not. This verse takes the pressure off getting it perfectly right.

Qur'an · Aal-i-Imraan 3:159

“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Due to Allah’s great mercy, your character, O Prophet, was made to be gentle with your Companions. If you were harsh in your words and actions and hard-hearted, they would have left you. So, pardon them their shortcomings with you and ask Allah to forgive them for what is between them and Allah; and ask their opinion in whatever needs to be agreed upon. Then if you decide on something after agreeing together, then go ahead with it, and trust in Allah. Allah loves those who trust in Him, giving them success and support.

Reflection

Consult, then decide, then rely on Allah. The order matters: advice first, then a decision, then trust rather than second-guessing.

Qur'an · Al-Ankaboot 29:69

“And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

And those who strive hard in My cause, seeking My pleasure, I will certainly grant them the ability to tread the straight path. Indeed, Allah is with those who do good by helping, assisting and guiding them.

Reflection

Those who strive for Allah are guided to His paths. Guidance arrives in motion, not while standing still waiting for certainty.

Qur'an · Taa-Haa 20:114

“So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Allah is High above and Exalted from what the idolaters describe Him with of deficiencies and from what they attribute as partners to Him. He is the Majestic King, to whom belongs the kingdom of everything, and who is the Truth and speaks the truth. Do not hasten, O Messenger, in reciting the Qur’ān with Gabriel before it is completely conveyed to you, and say: O Lord, increase me in knowledge, on top of what You have already taught me.

Reflection

'My Lord, increase me in knowledge' is the only thing the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to ask for more of. Before a decision, ask for knowledge, then go and gather it.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

Sahih

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): -- 'Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika, Wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, Wa as'alaka min fadlika Al-`azlm Fa-innaka taqdiru Wala aqdiru, Wa ta'lamu Wala a'lamu, Wa anta 'allamu l-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta'lam anna hadha-lamra Khairun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or 'ajili `Amri wa'ajilihi) Faqdirhu wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li Fihi, Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-lamra shar-run li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa'aqibati `Amri (or fi'ajili `Amri wa ajilihi) Fasrifhu anni was-rifni anhu. Waqdir li al-khaira haithu kana Thumma ardini bihi.' (O Allah! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, And Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this job is good for my religion and my subsistence and in my Hereafter--(or said: If it is better for my present and later needs)--Then You ordain it for me and make it easy for me to get, And then bless me in it, and if You know that this job is harmful to me In my religion and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or said: If it is worse for my present and later needs)--Then keep it away from me and let me be away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, And make me satisfied with it). The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need

Reflection

The Prophet ﷺ taught Istikhara for every matter the way he taught a surah of the Qur'an. Two rak'ahs and the supplication, then act on what seems best; the answer is often the ease or difficulty that follows.

Hadith · Sahih Muslim, Book 48, Hadith 48

Sahih

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying

He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead

Reflection

Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah eases for him a path to Paradise. Reading, asking and learning before a decision is itself a rewarded act.
