For when you feel

🌅 Grateful

A good day, a good news, a quiet blessing.

Qur'an · Ibrahim 14:7

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

Moses said to them: Remember when your Lord clearly announced to you: If you are grateful to Allah for the above-mentioned favours that He has blessed you with, then He will give you more from His favour and grace. But, if you deny His favours to you and do not show gratitude for them, His punishment is severe for those who deny His favours and are not grateful for them.

Reflection

Gratitude is not only a response to blessing; it is the cause of more. Say it out loud today, to Allah and to the people through whom it came.

Qur'an · An-Nahl 16:18

“And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

If you - O people - tried to count and list Allah’s many blessings that He has favoured you with, you will not be able to do so because they are so numerous and diverse. Allah is Forgiving, as He did not take you to task for being neglectful of showing thanks to Him, and Merciful, as he did not stop these blessings from you on account of your sins and failure to thank Him.

Reflection

The attempt to count is the point. Try listing ten favours of this morning alone: breath, sight, safety, tea, a message from home.

Qur'an · Ad-Dhuhaa 93:11

“But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it].”

Saheeh International translation

Explanation · Al-Mukhtasar

And be grateful for the favours of Allah upon you, and talk about them.

Reflection

Talking about a blessing, without arrogance, is an act of gratitude. Share the good news with someone who prayed for you.

Hadith · Sahih al-Bukhari 6412

Sahih

Narrated Ibn `Abbas

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time

Reflection

Health and free time are the two blessings most people lose without noticing. If you have both this weekend, you are wealthy. Spend some of it deliberately.

Hadith · Sahih Muslim, Book 55, Hadith 82

Sahih

Suhaib reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said

Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it

Reflection

Gratitude in ease is one half of the believer's whole life; the hadith pairs it with patience in hardship. Practising the first prepares you for the second.
